As a member of the Anti-Nazi resistance group called The White Rose, Sophie Scholl was convicted of high treason after having been found distributing anti-war leaflets at the University of Munich (LMU) with her brother Hans. As a result, they were both executed by guillotine. She was 21.Since the 1970s, Scholl has been extensively commemorated for her anti-Nazi resistance.

"How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause. Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go, but what does my death matter, if through us, thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?"

-Sophie Scholl, just before her execution
